Gaming Guide: Etiquette

Tabletop games, like most things in life, come with certain unspoken rules.  We thought that those of you who are new to tabletop games, or who simply need refreshing, would like to see a few pointers on gaming etiquette.

Invite Only.  You really shouldn’t show up to game night if you weren’t invited.  This seems like a pretty simple “rule” to follow, yet it isn’t always so.  While you may think, “Well all my friends are going…I’m sure it’s fine if I tag along,” it’s not.  Which also leads into the next point of invite only…don’t bring a guest without asking or at least letting the group know.

Be On Time.  No one likes to wait around waiting, being late is inconsiderate of other people’s time.  Of course you can’t always predict accidents or emergencies, so if there is one just let the group know.

Come Prepared.  These 2 words encompass a few unspoken rules.  The first being that you should usually come knowing the rules, unless of course you have made it clear you have never played before and want to learn.  Second, bring some snacks!  If you’re like me…you’re not good about sharing food.  Which is why it’s always a good idea to have each person bring a snack then have everyone share, that way there’s more than enough for everyone!  Lastly, if the game requires it, make sure to bring your own game materials (paper, pen, dice, pieces if necessary).  Some people are superstitious about their materials and don’t want others touching/playing with them.

No Distractions.  Phones, computers, tablets, TVs, etc. are all examples of really annoying distractions.  You came to play, not fiddle with your electronics.  It gets frustrating when you’re in the middle of an intense game and then someone doesn’t know what’s going on because they were on the phone for the last 10 minutes!

Practice Good Hygiene.  This is an excellent life rule and should therefore always be put in any “etiquette” list.
